New Year’s Eve in Vilnius 2026: fireworks, events and where to go

New Year’s Eve 2026 falls on Thursday 31 December, and the city celebration is on Cathedral Square (Katedros aikštė). The official “Kalėdos sostinėje” programme lists a video projection on the Cathedral Bell Tower from 22:00 to 01:00, with a laser show at midnight. There have been no city fireworks in Vilnius since the 2020/21 New Year. Friday 1 January 2027 is a public holiday, so most people get a three-day weekend (1 to 3 January). As of 20 October this guide lists 17 New Year events in Vilnius and the Vilnius district with tickets out, from a 25.39 EUR theatre ticket to a 259 EUR gala. “La Traviata” at the opera and the 31 December “Simfoninė salvė Naujiesiems” are already sold out.

Scope: the table lists events on 30 and 31 December whose tickets or places were on sale, or already sold out, on 20 October. We checked bilietai.lt, kakava.lt (the National Philharmonic), the LNOBT box office and organizers’ own sites; this is not a census of every event in the city. Each date counts separately, so “La Traviata” and “Simfoninė salvė Naujiesiems” appear twice. Prices are base ticket prices without discounts or the ticket agent’s fee. No Vilnius club New Year’s parties had been announced that day.

Are there fireworks in Vilnius on New Year’s Eve 2026?

The official programme has no city fireworks on Cathedral Square. The “Kalėdos sostinėje” festival site lists a video projection installation on the Cathedral Bell Tower for 31 December, the ninth in recent years, which the organizers call a sustainable, modern alternative to fireworks. The festival is run by the Vilnius Cultural Centre (Vilniaus kultūros centras).

Why no fireworks? Vilnius first went without them for the 2020/21 New Year, under Covid-19 restrictions. In July 2021 the city council resolved to develop alternatives to fireworks; projections on the Bell Tower have run since 2018. The 2025/26 New Year was the sixth in a row without city fireworks. Deputy Mayor Simona Bieliūnė told LRT that the format protects public health, the environment and animals, and warned that careless use of pyrotechnics in a square where thousands gather can have very serious consequences.

Where were there fireworks last year? On 31 December 2025 only two major Lithuanian cities held official fireworks. Kaunas had them on Town Hall Square at midnight (about 5,000 EUR). Klaipėda had them on Theatre Square at 00:00 (about 5,000 EUR), and LRT described them as more expensive but less noisy. Šiauliai and Panevėžys had none. Kaunas and Klaipėda had not announced their 2026 plans by 20 October. Near Vilnius, the Vilnius Grand Resort gala in Ežeraičiai promises fireworks at midnight, for its own guests only.

If you set off fireworks yourself, Article 17 of Lithuania’s law on the control of civilian pyrotechnics applies. Kaunas city municipality sums it up like this:

• Age: category F1 fireworks can be bought and used from age 14, F2 and F3 used from 18, and F4 only by licensed pyrotechnicians.
• Hours: use is banned from 22:00 to 08:00, except on public holidays (the municipality gives New Year as an example) and at events with a municipal permit.
• Distance: at least 30 m from schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centres, religious and funeral premises and apartment blocks; closer only with the building manager’s written consent.
• Cathedral Square: in 2025 the city asked people not to bring pyrotechnics because of the laser show. Vilnius municipality warned that violators would be warned or fined under the law.

What happens on Cathedral Square on New Year’s Eve 2026?

On 31 December the Cathedral Bell Tower becomes a colourful video projection installation from 22:00 to 01:00, and the festival’s English page adds a laser show at midnight. The celebration takes place on the open city square; the programme page lists no tickets or price. Performers and other details are not out yet: the organizers will publish the full “Kalėdos sostinėje” programme on 12 November. The Christmas tree and the Christmas carousel on the square stay until 6 January, while the Christmas Town market closes on 27 December.

Which New Year’s Eve events in Vilnius are already on sale?

Events on 30 and 31 December with tickets out by 20 October: 9 New Year concerts, 3 plays, 2 nights of “La Traviata” at the opera, 2 New Year dinners with a programme and a tango show.

What the table shows: all four “La Traviata” performances (30 and 31 December, 2 and 3 January) are sold out. “Simfoninė salvė Naujiesiems” on 31 December is sold out too, but the 30 December concert with the same performers still has tickets. The 18:00 “Farewell Symphony” has standing tickets only, while the 20:00 concert still had seats. The Vilnius Small Theatre and Keistuolių teatras showed only a few seats left. Only a handful of the cheapest “Diva in Rock” seats (81 EUR) remained; the LVSO site gives a 60 to 150 EUR range.

How to choose a New Year’s concert or show

• Symphonic: “Simfoninė salvė Naujiesiems” with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, conductor Modestas Pitrėnas, soprano Kseniya Bakhritdinova-Kravchuk and tenor Karolis Kašiuba. The programme is not out yet.
• Chamber music: the “Farewell Symphony” concert with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra and Sergej Krylov plays Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 and Haydn’s “Farewell” Symphony No. 45; the Philharmonic says it has seen out the old year with it every year since the 1970s. The Vilnius String Quartet and pianist Gintaras Januševičius play Mozart’s “Eine kleine Nachtmusik” and Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet. Kremerata Lituanica plays Vivaldi’s and Piazzolla’s “Four Seasons” at the Town Hall.
• Pop and light music: the LVSO’s “Diva in Rock” sets hits by Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, Céline Dion, Madonna, Adele and Lady Gaga for orchestra, sung by Ieva Prudnikovaitė, Ona Kolobovaitė and Evelina Sašenko (conductor Gintaras Rinkevičius). “Svaiginanti muzika Naujiesiems” plays Strauss, Lehár, Bernstein, Lloyd Webber and Leroy Anderson. There is also the retro concert “O buvo taip...” (tangos, waltzes, foxtrots, musical and film tunes) and a song evening at Keistuolių teatras.
• Theatre: Molière’s “Tartuffe” (1 h 50 min) at the National Drama Theatre, Gombrowicz’s “The Marriage” at the State Youth Theatre and Goldoni’s comedy “Vasarotojų karštinė” (dir. Gabrielė Tuminaitė, 3 hours with an interval) at the Vilnius Small Theatre.
• Opera: “La Traviata” runs about 3 h 20 min, sung in Italian with Lithuanian and English surtitles, conducted by Ričardas Šumila; on 31 December Viktorija Miškūnaitė sings Violetta and Edgaras Montvidas Alfredo. On 20 October all four performances were sold out.
• Dance: the “Aistringų Naujųjų” tango show (1 h 15 min) with six dancers and live vocals, 16+.

Where are the New Year’s Eve parties in Vilnius?

On 20 October bilietai.lt listed no Vilnius club New Year’s parties yet (its only 31 December party was at the Tauragė arena). For now, two hotels sell a midnight party with dancing, both with dinner:

• Vilnius Grand Resort (Ežeraičių g. 2, Ežeraičių village, Vilnius district): the “2027 Naujieji metai” gala. Doors at 20:00, buffet dinner 20:00 to 23:45, host Evaldas Venskutonis, Paulina Paukštaitytė sings at 22:10, fireworks and sparkling wine at midnight, then DJ Aleksandras Djačenko until dawn. 259 EUR per person; a VIP seat by the stage with unlimited drinks until midnight costs 80 EUR more; with accommodation from 344 EUR (1 night) or 429 EUR (2 nights). The page gives no calendar date, only “2027 Naujieji metai”.
• Hilton Garden Inn Vilnius City Centre (Gedimino pr. 44B): 31 December, 19:00 to 01:00, welcome drink, oysters, a Mediterranean snack and dessert buffet, a main course (one of two), live vocals, then a DJ until 01:00 and a midnight toast on the rooftop terrace. 129 EUR per person; for two with accommodation 369 EUR (1 night) or 469 EUR (2 nights), plus the Vilnius city tax of 2 EUR per person per night; non-refundable.

For club parties, look closer to the date. The Bonder New Year’s Eve page lists public New Year events in Vilnius from 28 December to 1 January, and parties on other nights are on the nightlife page.

How much is New Year’s Eve dinner in Vilnius?

On 20 October two places had published 2026 New Year’s Eve dinner prices: Hilton Garden Inn (129 EUR per person) and Vilnius Grand Resort (259 EUR per person). We found no other Vilnius restaurant offers yet, so below are past years’ prices as a guide.

The bigger picture: in December 2024 tv3.lt reported New Year’s Eve dinners in Vilnius from about 100 to nearly 1,000 EUR per person, and a hotel night that evening could cost more than 1,000 EUR. In 2021 a Vilnius resident quoted by LRT found food prices of about 45 to 70 EUR per person at six restaurants, with drinks and an 8 to 10% service charge on top. We found no newer survey of Vilnius restaurant prices, for 2025/26.

How much is a countryside cottage (sodyba) for New Year’s Eve?

Renting a sodyba, a countryside guesthouse with a sauna and often a hot tub, is a common way for groups in Lithuania to see in the New Year. There is no 2026 price survey yet, so these figures come from the Lithuanian Rural Tourism Association in earlier years:

• December 2024 (LRT, association president Agnė Vaitkuvienė): a smaller sodyba for up to 10 people could be found for about 400 EUR, while places for about 30 people started at over 1,000 EUR.
• That year the first New Year bookings came in August and enquiries peaked in November. Large sodybos for groups of 20 to 30 and those within about 100 km of the big cities go first; ones further out are cheaper and less busy.
• December 2025 (tv3.lt, Monika Sadauskaitė-Pocė, head of the association’s Kaunas branch): her cottage for up to 10 with a sauna and hot tub costs 500 EUR on a normal weekend and 900 EUR on New Year’s Eve. New Year bookings start in September and most Kaunas-area sodybos are taken by September or October; small places for 10 to 15 go fastest, and halls for 30 or more go more slowly.
• December 2021 (LRT): a group of 20 paid 800 EUR for a night at a sodyba near Vilnius.

By these accounts, small sodybos near the big cities are the scarcest by late October, so for a group of 10 to 15 it is worth calling now. You can create the invitation for friends on Bonder: only people with the link see the event, and RSVPs can have a guest limit and a waitlist.

Where to spend New Year’s Eve in Vilnius with kids?

• Kids’ pyjama party at Vilnius Grand Resort: 19:30 to 23:30, a children’s buffet all evening, entertainers, and Santa with gifts at 23:15; 65 EUR. The page gives no age range, but children up to and including 5 must always be with a parent, guardian or supervising person aged 14 or over. At the main gala, under 6s are free if they need no chair or pram space, and over 12s pay the adult price.
• Early concerts: “Svaiginanti muzika Naujiesiems” at 17:00 at St Catherine’s Church (7+, 1 h 30 min), “O buvo taip...” at 18:00 at the Academy of Sciences (no age limit, under 6s free without a seat, 1 hour), the “Farewell Symphony” at 18:00 at St John’s Church (7+, 1 h 15 min) and Vivaldi and Piazzolla at 18:30 at the Town Hall (7+, 1 h 10 min). All end well before midnight.
• Cathedral Square: the Bell Tower projection starts at 22:00, so with small children you can watch the first hour and be home before midnight.
• During the day: the Christmas tree and the Christmas carousel on Cathedral Square stay until 6 January, the Christmas train from Šventaragio g. 2 runs until 3 January, and the “Vilniaus ledas” ice rink on Town Hall Square is open until 25 January. Their 2026 prices are not announced yet.

Is public transport free on New Year’s Eve in Vilnius?

For 2026 it has not been announced yet. For the last two years Vilnius buses and trolleybuses were free from 20:00 on 31 December to 04:00 on 1 January. In August 2026 LRT reported that the council had rejected a proposal to make all public transport free until the end of the year. The article said free transport is planned for the Christmas tree lighting and for the evening and night of New Year’s Eve.

• 2025/26: free 20:00 to 04:00; night routes ran every 15 minutes that night (N8 every 30 minutes), some with higher-capacity buses. From 29 December to 2 January routes 11, 13, 14, 15, 20, 26, 28, 38, 41, 51, 57, 61, 62, 88 and 114 ran on the weekend timetable.
• 2024/25: free 20:00 to 04:00; night routes 101N to 105N and suburban 29, 36 and 42 ran from about 23:00 to 02:00, with the nearest stops to Cathedral Square at Karaliaus Mindaugo tiltas and Vinco Kudirkos aikštė. Night bus 88N (Airport, Station, Centre, Europos aikštė) runs every night.
• Road closures: in 2025/26 T. Vrublevskio, Šventaragio and Barboros Radvilaitės streets were closed to cars from 21:00 on 31 December to 02:00 on 1 January; in 2024/25 the same streets closed from 22:00, and buses 10, 11, 33 and 89 were diverted from 22:00.
• Driving in? In 2024/25 the park and ride car parks (Savanorių pr., Ukmergės g. and Pilaitė, V. Pociūno g.) cost 0.50 EUR including a public transport ticket.
• For final timetables, the city transport company JUDU recommends judu.lt, the m.Ticket and Trafi apps, and stops.lt.

New Year’s Eve in Kaunas and Klaipėda

Neither Kaunas nor Klaipėda had published a 2026 programme by 20 October. For the 2025/26 New Year both held fireworks:

• Kaunas: the celebration returned to Town Hall Square after a break, from 23:00, with electronic music artist Jovani, “Ugnies teatras” dancers and aerial acrobats, and fireworks at midnight. Concerts also ran at Romuva, the Kaunas Philharmonic, Girstutis Culture Palace, the VDU Great Hall and Žalgirio Arena.
• Klaipėda: Theatre Square, festive concert 22:00 to 23:55, Mayor Arvydas Vaitkus’s greeting at 23:50, fireworks at 00:00, then the “Sveiki atvykę 2026-ieji!” disco with DJ BeLeo from 00:15 to 01:00.
• Already on sale in Kaunas: “Magiškas Naujųjų metų sutikimas” at Kauno OAZĖ (Baltų pr. 16), 31 December from 20:00, with illusionist Mantas Wizard, tenor Merūnas Vitulskis and a DJ after midnight; 120 to 140 EUR as of 20 October.

What to know before 31 December

• Shorter working day: 31 December is a working day, but as the eve of a public holiday it is one hour shorter (Labour Code, article 112); 1 January is a public holiday (article 123).
• Alcohol in shops: the law has no special holiday rules, so on Thursday 31 December and Friday 1 January shops sell alcohol at normal weekday hours, 10:00 to 20:00 (if the shop is open that day).
• Book early: by 20 October every “La Traviata”, the 31 December “Simfoninė salvė Naujiesiems” and every seat at the 18:00 “Farewell Symphony” were sold out, and several theatres had only a few seats left.
• Read the terms: the Hilton Garden Inn offer is non-refundable, a Vilnius Grand Resort booking stands only once you get a confirmation email, and latecomers are not admitted to “Tartiufas”.
• Dress warmly: Vilnius averages -2.0 °C in December and -2.9 °C in its last ten days (LHMT 1991 to 2020 normals), and the sun sets at 16:01 on 31 December.
